West Shore charmer, perfect for large family gatherings, in the best location in Chamberlands

When we were looking to buy our Tahoe home, we wanted somewhere with rustic Tahoe charm, a living area big enough to fit our large family, and easy walking distance to the lake, where our family would be able to completely relax while also feeling pampered with a bit of luxury. We searched for 3 full years, never finding a home that satisfied all of our criteria. But when we saw this home, we knew it was “the one.” The home had been loved by the same family for generations, and we knew that our family would love it too.

Designed for large family gatherings

We approached the remodel with our big extended family in mind. On the inside, we removed a wall between the kitchen and living room to create a huge open-concept area large enough for everyone to comfortably hang out together. We created the family room upstairs for when the grandkids wanted to be goofy and have “no grownups.” We added another bathroom, and remodeled the existing ones to make them as functional and flexible as possible. We added a 7-person hot tub right outside the backdoor. We made room for lots of seating inside and outside on the back patio, so that everyone can be together for those big spaghetti dinners and summer barbeques. We even put in 2 dishwashers to handle all of the dirty dishes.

We also realized that we wouldn’t always have the whole family there at the same time, so we wanted to make the space comfortable regardless of how many people are there. When it’s just the two of us in the shoulder season, we stay downstairs, and the single-level living is warm and cosy. When we are entertaining friends, we love having 3 bedrooms with en-suite bathrooms. And when we’re hosting the whole family, the upstairs living room converts to a bedroom by closing the curtain, allowing us to comfortably sleep 11 (or 14 if you fill up all the couches).

And last but not least, we wanted to be able to accommodate our furry guests. So having a fenced in yard means that guests can let their dogs run around after chipmunks, smell all of the forest smells, and take long naps in the sun ... without us having to worry about them wandering away and getting lost.

Location! Location! Location!

We were also super picky about the location. We knew and loved Chamberlands, and all that it has to offer. On the West Shore, there’s nothing else like it. Full membership privileges give us access to all of the amenities. The pool is especially great for the little kids (or - let’s be honest - the grown adults) who can’t handle the cold lake water. Chamberlands is also ideally located on the West Shore. We also wanted to be sure that - after the long drive up from the Bay Area - we would be able to park the car in the garage or driveway, hang up the car keys, and be able to either walk, run or bike to wherever we need to go. The lake is 1⁄4 mile through the meadow.

Obexer’s Deli is just 1 mile north. PDQ and Where We Met (great for morning coffee or afternoon gelato) are just 1 mile south.

Even within Chamberlands, we were picky about wanting to be as close to the lake as possible, and not be up on any hills. We didn’t want guests to feel like they had to drive to the store or down to the beach (there’s almost no parking during busy summer months). We had rented houses further up the hill, and learned that despite everyone’s best intentions, when it came down to it, we always drove everywhere. But being down at the bottom of the hill, and so close to the lake, we just slip on our flip flops, put a beach chair on our back, and walk down to the beach. We also realized over time that most of the cars entering Chamberlands drive up Lodge and turn left to access the majority of the neighborhood. That means that, being on the right side of Lodge, the street outside our house has less traffic, and is safer for the kids when they’re playing in our yard. Our one fear was that by being so close to the lake, we’d hear all of the traffic on the main road. But we’re happy to report that other than the odd Harley Davidson thundering by, you can’t hear the road traffic at all.

Room for future generations

The thing about families is that they never stay the same. Kids grow up and get tired of sleeping on the floor. Teenagers turn into young adults who start their own families. Parents become grandparents and want to avoid having to climb too many stairs. One of the things we love most about this home is the built-in potential it has to grow and evolve along with the family.

The garage is large enough to hold a big boat and a large SUV. It also has a shop area for home projects, storage bins for your toys, and room to store bikes and everything else. But what’s extra special is the space above the garage: pop in a couple of dormer windows to match the main house, and you could easily fit 2 more bedrooms and another bathroom. With an extra large driveway that can comfortably fit up to 9 cars, this means the house can grow to accommodate future generations.

In addition, the home is on an extra large lot compared to other Chamberlands homes. That’s good because bigger lots can have bigger homes, bigger decks etc... In addition, we filed our survey with the county showing that we are grandfathered into up to 43% coverage. That means that you can get creative - remove the patio in back and turn it into a deck that wraps around the house ... or connect the garage to the house ... as long as you stay within 43% coverage!

In the years that we’ve owned this home, we have poured our love and pride into every detail, making it the perfect space for our large family to get together and make lifetime memories. Its large size allowed everyone to gather together and be comfortable, and its location made everything easily accessible and stress-free. We have loved every second spent in this home, and we know you will too.
